The Year Pop Exploded!

Sunday, October 23rd, 2011

Sunday October 23, 2011

Dear friends,

This was the biggest HPX in our 19-year history!!  I’m a bit freaked out to be honest as I have no clue how we’re going to top it next year.  Luckily we have 360 days to plan and we’re not wasting any time.

Another year is done and we are so glad we could share this week of music with you, our friends, fans, bands, volunteers, sponsors, board and anyone else who showed up to support independent and innovative music.

It was a HUGE 5 days and before we take a collective breath, rest our feet and reconnect with friends  and family we wanted to extend a great big THANK YOU to everyone for coming out in droves to support independent music.

If you have pictures share them, if you have stories we want to hear them, if you took video, did a review of a show, attended the conference please please please send us your stories.  Post them up on Facebook, twitter or email them to us at info@halifaxpopexplosion.com and we’ll compile them for our history book…or filing cabinet as it currently stands.

We are all pretty touched that you decided to spend your time with us and are honored to have the best fans, bands, volunteers, sponsors and partners in the world.  I wish I could hug every one of you but a virtual high five will have to suffice.

We will be sending out a survey in the next few days to see what you thought.  What worked, what didn’t, what you would change if you were in charge and what you would keep the same.  HPX is your festival and we want you to keep us moving in the right direction so keep your eyes peeled for the survey and fill it out when it comes in.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for the best festival ever, we can’t wait to do it all again next year with you so mark the dates – 20th Anniversary Oct 16-20, 2012.

Sincerely,

Jonny Stevens

Last chance to HPX – Final Day of Halifax Pop Explosion

Saturday, October 22nd, 2011

We’ve reached the final day of Halifax Pop Explosion- but not to worry we’ve jam packed the day with so many shows it makes my head spin.

SCHEDULE CHANGES

  • FREE – STARS, PLANTS AND ANIMALS, CARMEN TOWNSEND, PAPERMAPS – 12PM – OLYMPIC HALL All Ages(Moved from Grand Parade)
  • MURDER BY DEATH – 12AM – NORTH STREET CHURCH – 5657 North St. 19+ (Moved from Seahorse)
  • SECRET GUEST – 1AM – SEAHORSE

Check out a few pics from last night on our facebook page and be sure to send your shots our way so we can see all the good times you’re having.

The final day of the #POPular Conference focuses on Sponsorships/Endorsements in music, our Festival Symposium, Fostering the all ages scene, Curmudgeons Corner – how not to get a gig, Artist interview with Fucked Up and our keynote from Martin Atkins – Welcome to the Music Business, You’re Still Fucked.  That’s a lot of swearing for one paragraph but it’s just because it is so awesome we allowed the extra F bombs.

Now onto music and hold onto your seats as its a BIG day…

I hope your hungry as we’ve got the annual Brunch, which has been taken over by CKDU and features your favorite breakfast foods like bacon, eggs, toast, coffee and some killer music (with ANOTHER secret guest!) to get you going.  Next up we’ve got Stars and Plants and Animals at Olympic Community Hall at 12PM.  Did we mention it was FREE and ALL AGES. Capcity is limited so arrive early and please consider bringing a non perishable food donation for the Parker Street Food Bank to this show as we’re collecting for their worthy cause.

Later on Saturday afternoon we’ve got an all ages show at the Pavilion with Fucked Up, Chixdiggit and Envision which will be bonkers for you under 19 folks. Geezers welcome.  Into the evening we’ve got a super duper secret guest at Tribeca, and a super stacked bill at the Palace with Fucked Up, No Joy and PS I Love You.  Reflections has Trouble Andrew and a reunion from Hip Club Groove, St. Matthews Church sees the return of Rural Alberta Advantage (hands up if you were at their first HPX show years ago), Jeff Torbert releases his CD at Fred on Agricola while across the street at Gus Pub we’ve got Demons Claws from Montreal, Olympic Hall has our annual SIRIUS XM + CBC Radio 3 live broadcast featuring Chad VanGaalen, Miracle Fortress, Suuns and the Meligrove Band, with North Street Church having MURDER BY DEATH ADDED making it a another rockin show.  The Company House features Austin’s own Spring Standards, Jennifer Castle and the Weather Station while across the street at the Bus Stop Theatre we’ve got Bruce Peninsula.  The Seahorse Tavern has a SECRET GUEST to take over from Murder by Death and around the corner at the Khyber we’ve got the Broken Chord Showcase with Trouble Shooters and a whole lotta rockabilly rockin the room.

Just remember to breathe.  It’s a lot to handle at once and it is the last night so be sure to get out there and live it up!

Cheers,

Team HPX
