2010 Halifax Pop Explosion announces Basia Bulat with Symphony Nova Scotia & June 04 fundraiser with In-Flight Safety & Andrew Watt and the Glory Glory

…early bird passes and host hotel rooms now on sale

The Halifax Pop Explosion (HPX) announces Basia Bulat with Symphony Nova Scotia (Friday, October 22) as the first act confirmed for the festival’s 2010 line-up. Taking place from October 19-23, HPX is happy to announce that early bird passes are on sale now for the lowest prices in the festival’s 18 years history. The festival is also hosting a fundraiser show on June 04 at The Paragon with In-Flight Safety, Andrew Watt & The Glory Glory, Milks & Rectangles, Racoon Bandit .

Basia Bulat with Symphony Nova Scotia

Basia Bulat recently released her acclaimed sophomore album, Heart Of My Own. The album is the follow-up to her acclaimed debut, Oh, My Darling, which was nominated for the prestigious Polaris Music Award. Heart Of My Own was born after over a year of touring that took Bulat across Europe, Australia, Canada and the United States several times over. Bulat will perform songs from both albums while backed by Symphony Nova Scotia on Friday, October 22 at the Rebecca Cohn.

HPX Fundraiser Concert

In celebration and in support of the festival, The Halifax Pop Explosion Association is producing a fundraiser concert that will take place on June 04 and will feature performances by In-Flight Safety, Andrew Watt & The Glory Glory, Milks & Rectangles, Racoon Bandit along with other festivities planned for the evening.

In-Flight Safety kick started 2010 with their song, “Model Homes,” being featured in a season premiere episode of NBC’s Chuck. Later that same week they found out by surprise that their song “Surround” had been chosen to score the TV trailer for the romantic box office smash hit, Dear John. Soon after, the band headed West, playing at Vancouver’s LiveCity Downtown site during the Olympics. Back home the band recently celebrated the ECMA weekend, where they showcased for international delegates and performed as part of the concert series. The band took home two ECMA trophies: Alternative Record of The Year and Group of the Year. Going into the weekend In-Flight Safety was the second most nominated act, behind Joel Plaskett. The group recently returned from a National tour featuring dates with two buzz-worthy bands from Vancouver: Said The Whale and Yukon Blonde.

Mixing a combination of DIY Phil Spector “wall of sound” production with the melodic charms or Randy Newman, the cloudy haze of Dennis Wilson, and the large-scale arrangements of Brian Wilson, Andrew Watt and The Glory Glory’s First Day of Summer Life is an orchestral pop gem. As a member of the internationally renowned Halifax pop outfit The Heavy Blinkers, Watt received critical acclaim from magazines such as Mojo, Q, Uncut, and Rolling Stone.  Recently, The Heavy Blinkers were named one of the “greatest bands you probably never heard of” by Spin.

Tickets for the Halifax Pop Explosion Association Fundraiser Concert show will be $12 advance (http://ww3.ticketpro.ca/event.php?event_id=1213) $15 at the door.

Friday June 4th at the Paragon – Doors at 9pm. Show starts at 10pm sharp.
