Artist Application FAQ
How do I apply to play HPX?
We only accept applications through the above form. Here it is again. Please note that email applications are not accepted.
Who can apply to play?
HPX has a history of programming artists across multiple genres like indie rock, pop, hip-hop, electronic, R&B, alt-country, and more. Check out this page for a full list of programming from previous years.
What are you looking for in artist applications?
We are looking for artists that are ready to develop their career at a national and international level. This varies from artist to artist, but for the most part, it’s important that you have at least one album, a social media presence, have performed live at least a few times, and are continuously working on your music. Of course, these aren’t mandatory, but they’re a good start! Make sure you fill out the form correctly, and provide only the highlights — put your best foot forward!
Who reviews my application?
The mandatory administrative fee ensures that every application is review by our programming team, comprised of HPX staff and members of the music community,
How will I know if I’ve been accepted?
You will receive an artist contract via the main contact in your application. Read this thoroughly! It is a contract and it’s important that you understand all of the details of your performance before agreeing to play. We will notify all accepted applicants by mid-September, 2020.
Do artists receive compensation?
All artists that play HPX receive financial compensation. Each band member will also receive an artist wristband that provides access to the conference and festival.
If I am accepted, how do I get there and where do I stay?
HPX does not provide assistance with artist travel, accommodations or per diems. That being said, we do offer a Billeting Program on a first come, first served basis. Details about this program can be found in your artist contract. We also have a special rate offered by our partner hotel, Hotel Halifax. You need to use this link, and book by September 21 in order to receive the rate. FACTOR offers support for travelling artists, more info here.
Do I have to bring all of my gear?
Unless otherwise noted, Halifax Pop Explosion will provide basic backline for all bands (drum, bass and guitar amp). The rest is up to you.
What if I’m not accepted?
If you’re not accepted to play, you will receive an email to the main contact in your application. Don’t take it to heart! The festival only has a specific amount of slots every year. Maybe it’s just not your year. We notice who applies year after year, and we love seeing career progress in your applications.
We would like to acknowledge that the festival takes place in Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq People. This territory is covered by the “Treaties of Peace and Friendship” which Mi’kmaq and Wolastoqiyik (Maliseet) people first signed with the British Crown in 1725. The treaties did not deal with surrender of lands and resources but in fact recognized Mi’kmaq and Wolastoqiyik (Maliseet) title and established the rules for what was to be an ongoing relationship between nations.
